Does my Baitcast Reel need to be disassembled and oiled?
yesterday my grandpa gave me a baitcasting reel that he had gotten around 11 years ago, and Never Used. it has never been oiled or taken apart and when put a bit of line on it (about 1/3rd of the spool filled) and tried to cast it, it wouldn't cast. i tried to tighten and loosen the mechanical brake, and the Star Drag, but this didn't seem to help at all. the reel is an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600AB Anti-Backlash. (also this is my first Baitcaster Reel.)
Sounds like the grease and oil in your reel dried and gummed up. Clean off old grease and oil and reapply oil and grease should solve your problem. If you don't know how to clean your reel properly, many shops will do it for you for a small fee. Current going rate to get your reel serviced is between $10 to $12.
